What is Pond Hockey?
Pond hockey appears to be very similar to ice hockey, however, it is far more simple and artistically designed as it is traditionally played on a part of naturally frozen body of water. Games of pond hockey are usually casual events, though some tournaments are held.
The rink in this sport is smaller than in ice hockey — about 50 to 80 percent of the standard size of a NHL-specification rink, with teams of just four players. The playing area used in this sport also do not have any boards or glass surroundings as there are in ice hockey. In addition, there are also no such protective barriers behind the goal to contain high missed shots.
In pond hockey there is usually no specific goalie, which means that in this sport more emphasis is on skating and puck handling ability as compared to shooting and checking. Players wear limited protective clothing, and hard contact is discouraged. 토토
What Are The Rules In Pond Hockey?
Pond hockey rules vary from rink to rink. Players are typically the ones to enforce rules for the game unless it is part of a tournament.
Some, but not all, pond hockey games include goalies and allow cross-checking. The number of players who play on a team varies.
Is Pond Hockey Dangerous?
To ensure safety in pond hockey, the ice needs to be a certain thickness. Drills should be used to check ice thickness at various spots on the frozen pond. Players should still wear appropriate equipment for protection while playing pond hockey.
How to play pond hockey?
The most important tactic to possess in pond hockey is good passing, because incomplete passes can result in losing pucks in the surrounding snow. Most of the game consists of open ice puck handling; therefore hand-eye coordination is crucial. Speed is also an important ingredient that makes a good pond hockey player.
There are no goalies in pond hockey which almost guarantees goals on break away streaks. To be a skilled pond hockey player one does not necessarily need to have a good shot, because the goal is barely taller than the height of the puck the player just has to be accurate in guiding the puck close to goal. In pond hockey, a good player does not specialize in offense or defence.
Teamwork becomes important, because the lack of a goalie everyone has to work together to make sure the other team does not get an easy goal. Playing intelligently becomes key, because if a player makes a bad pass or slips over an opponent, the opponent will have an easy attempt at a goal.
History
FCPHL (Fort Collins Pond Hockey League) started in 1992 on a local pond in Fort Collins, CO. A few friends that worked at a business across from the Prospect Ponds found themselves admiring the ice when it froze over in the winter. Even though most of them hadn’t ever played hockey before (let alone ice skated before), the beckoning black ice, some encouragement from their boss and a pile of old hockey sticks provided the the opportunity for them to try. Over time, the group that came to play on the ice grew larger every winter through word of mouth. Regular games would take place on the weekends and sometimes on lunch breaks. The culture they established for the ice boiled down to obeying just one rule: If you skate on the pond than help shovel the pond.
